Arts & Culture(D-1)

Eligible Persons and Scope of Activities Persons intending to engage in academic or artistic activities not aimed at profit (including those conducting specialized research on Korea’s indigenous culture or arts, or those receiving guidance from experts).

Note: Invitations from profit-making organizations such as general Taekwondo academies or dance schools are not applicable.
Maximum Stay Period Granted per Visit 2 years
Activities Outside the Scope of Stay Status 1. Foreign nationals residing in Korea who wish to receive expert guidance on Korea’s indigenous culture or traditional arts, or to study Korean at a university-affiliated language institute, do not require a separate permit procedure within the period of stay.

2. Volunteering without profit within the period of stay does not require a separate permit procedure.
Target: Foreign nationals residing in Korea
Permitted scope:

* Volunteering at public institutions, orphanages, nursing homes, free meal centers, charity bazaars, international exhibitions, international events, etc.

* Provision of meal and transportation expenses is allowed.

3. Holders of the Cultural Arts (D-1) visa who wish to attend regular educational institutions (elementary, middle, high school, or university) without infringing on their original stay purpose may do so within the period of stay without a separate permit procedure.

4. Cultural Arts (D-1) activities outside the visa status for family members of foreign diplomatic personnel in Korea (A-1, A-2 status)

Academic or artistic activities not aimed at profit: permit required

Application documents:

① Application form (Form No. 34), original passport, diplomatic ID, fee

② Recommendation letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade

③ Cooperation letter or consent from the embassy

④ Copy of business registration or organization registration certificate

Change or Addition of Workplace ➠ Not subject to reporting for change or addition of workplace

1. Holders of the following non-profit stay statuses are processed by reporting changes to foreigner registration details, not by reporting workplace changes or additions (Enforcement Rule Article 49-2):

󰋻 Holders of Cultural Arts (D-1), Study Abroad (D-2), General Training (D-4), or Trade Management (D-9) status who change or add affiliated institutions or organizations (including name changes)

󰋻 Holders of Job-Seeking (D-10) status who report the start of training or changes to the training institution (including name changes)

󰋻 Holders of Visiting Employment (H-2) status who report starting employment with a new individual, institution, organization, or company for the first time, or changes to their existing employer (including name changes)

2. Required documents

① Application form (Form No. 34), passport, fee

② Statement of reason for workplace change or addition issued by the cultural arts organization

③ Proof documents of the cultural arts organization such as business registration certificate under the Value-Added Tax Act

Permission for Change of Stay Status 1. Cases where a change of stay status to Cultural and Artistic (D-1) is possible

Persons who acquired foreign nationality through overseas adoption

Germans
In the case of Germans entering under the visa exemption (B-1) status, a change to a long-term stay status is possible.

a. Permitted stay statuses: All long-term stay statuses except Technical Training (D-3), Non-professional Employment (E-9), and Tourism Employment (H-1)

b. Permitted period: Up to the maximum stay period allowed for each stay status

Canadians staying less than 6 months
Among Canadian nationals who intend to stay less than 6 months, those who wish to engage in the following statuses may be permitted a change of stay status:
a. Applicable stay statuses: Cultural and Artistic (D-1), Religious (D-6), Visiting and Cohabitation (F-1), Accompanying Family (F-3), Others (G-1)
b. Stay period: Less than 6 months from the date of entry

Mandatory documents

* Application form (Form No. 34)

* Original passport

* Fee

* Training schedule prepared by the training institution

* Documentation proving affiliation with cultural/artistic organization (copy of business registration certificate, etc.)

Additional documents required for review

* Letter of invitation

* Certificate of training

* Proof of financial resources (tuition fees, living expenses)

* If financial proof cannot be submitted, a guarantor certificate will be requested
Permission for Extension of Stay Period 1. Required Documents

Mandatory documents

① Application form (Form No. 34), original passport, alien registration card, fee

② Training schedule prepared by the training institution

③ Documentation proving cultural/artistic organization affiliation such as business registration certificate under the Value Added Tax Act

④ Proof of residence (lease contract, accommodation confirmation, notice of stay expiration by mail, utility bill receipt, dormitory fee receipt, etc.)

Re-entry Permit 1. Exemption from re-entry permit if re-entering within one year from the date of departure

* If the remaining period of stay is less than one year, exemption applies within the remaining period of stay

※ However, those subject to entry restrictions or visa issuance restrictions must visit the relevant immigration office (branch office or sub-office) to obtain a re-entry permit

2. Multiple re-entry permit (Saudi Arabia, Iran, Libya have restrictions on multiple re-entry permits. However, marriage immigrants (F-6), students (D-2), and general trainees (D-4) from these countries are allowed)

* For re-entry beyond one year but within two years after departure, within the remaining period of stay

* Required documents: application form (Form No. 34), original passport, alien registration card, fee

3. Countries exempt from re-entry permits

Germany, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Suriname, Chile (C-3-4, D-7, D-8, D-9)
Alien Registration 1. Documents required for alien registration application

① Application form (Form No. 34), original passport, one standard-sized photo, fee

② Proof documents of cultural and artistic organization such as business registration certificate

③ Proof of place of stay

2. Reporting changes in alien registration details

Reportable items: Name, gender, date of birth and nationality, passport number, issue date, and validity period

Applicable to: Changes or additions (including name changes) of affiliated institutions or organizations (since 2010.11.16)

Reporting deadline: Within 15 days from the date of change

Required documents

① Application form (Form No. 34), passport, alien registration card, no fee

② Proof of changes: Admission letter or recommendation letter from the head of the training institution, etc.
