Chapter 2. EMPLOYMENT VISA FOR FOREIGNERS AND IMMIGRATION CONTROL

Permission for Activities Other Than Residence Status for Foreign Spouses Residing in Korea

First, the spouses of high-net-worth foreign investors and professional foreign workers can obtain permission to work in all occupations other than simple laborer residence status (D-3, E-9) through activities other than residence status. Eligible for employment are spouses of advanced science and technology personnel (SCIENCE card), advanced technology personnel (GOLD card), information technology personnel (IT card), spouses of corporate investment (D-8) holders who have invested more than $500,000 in USD, and spouses of professional foreign workers (excluding E-6-2 and E-7). The required documents to be submitted can be found in the attached documents by residence status specified in Article 76 of the Immigration Act Enforcement Regulation, and when applying to work in a specific activity (E-7), the guidelines for issuing a special activity (E-7) certification will be applied. For example, if the spouse of a professional foreign worker with an E-7 qualification wants to work in the specific activity (E-7) field of professional foreign workers, they will need to submit an application, passport and alien registration card, one photo, fees, employment contract, copy of business registration certificate, degree and qualification certificates, proof of career history, and a letter of employment recommendation or proof of employment necessity from the relevant government agency.
Second, if a visitor cohabitant (F-1) or accompanying person (F-3) wants to work as a foreign language conversation teacher, they must obtain permission to work through activities other than residence status with a conversation instructor (E-2) qualification or a special activity (E-7) qualification if they want to work as a foreign school teacher. The required documents to be submitted include an application, passport and alien registration card, fees, employment contract, copy of business registration certificate, criminal background check (same as E-2 qualification requirements), employment physical examination (same as E-2 qualification requirements), teaching qualification certificate for the relevant country (degree and proof of career history if there is no teaching qualification certificate), request letter from the school principal, and foreign teacher status (only for foreign school teachers).
Third, if a visitor cohabitant (F-1) or accompanying person (F-3) wants to work as a foreign language education instructor for a national or public institution (local government or government investment agency), they must obtain permission to work through activities other than residence status with a special activity (E-7) qualification. The required documents to be submitted include an application, passport and alien registration card, fees, original and copy of degree certificate, employment contract, copy of business registration certificate, and recommendation letter (from the relevant agency).
